Certainly now, music is a thing that unites us all. We need these music awards shows. We can’t go to concerts! Come on, we need something!
Taraji P. Henson to Billboard
On November 22, the 2020 American Music Awards (AMAs) took place and due to the current state of the world during the pandemic, it took place in an empty stadium with virtual appearances from artists around the world. This fan-based event was hosted by the enthusiastic Taraji P. Henson who spoke charismatically and with a noticeable passion.
Some of the best performances of the night were done by Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Bebe Rexha and Doja Cat, BTS, The Weeknd and Kenny G, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Lil Baby and more. Since some of the performers were either unable to make it due to COVID-19 restrictions, they had to have a virtual performance. While that may not sound exciting at a first glance, the artists captivated the audience with excellent choreography and visuals, making the time all the more worthwhile.
As hinted previously, the AMAs is an awards ceremony where the winners are selected by the public and their fans! While all artists who were nominated display remarkable artistry, the public only chose a few who they felt most deserved the title.
After the large success that Taylor Swift‘s Folklore proved to be, it is not incredibly surprising that she won Artist of the Year, Favourite Music Video and Favourite Female Pop/Rock Artist. Only three other artists won three AMAs this year and they were: The Weeknd, Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber. Other notable wins were: Doja Cat – New Artist of the Year and Favorite Female Artist (Soul/R&B), Harry Styles – Favourite Pop/Rock Album, BTS – Favorite Social Artist and Favorite Duo or Group (Pop/Rock) and many more!
The full list of winners can be found on the AMA’s website and the program may be available depending on service providers.
This year the Grammys are expected to be done similarly however they carry much more prestige. Many of the artists who were nominated for AMAs, were also nominated in subsequent Grammy categories. An especially groundbreaking nomination this year was that of BTS being nominated, for the first time, for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
For many viewers, artists and reporters alike the American Music Awards can seem like a practice run for the Grammys. However, the AMAs may have been just enough to get everyone to 2021 which will hopefully have great things in store for music and the world!
