A new European soccer tournament has been introduced this September, and one major questions seem to be on many fans minds: What is this tournament?

The Nation’s League is a European competition being held from September to November 2018, with the finals happening in June 2019. It involves all 55 members of UEFA (Union of European Football Association). This makes the division of groups rather tricky, seeing how there is an odd number of teams competing. However, that isn’t the only confusing aspect of this tournament.

The 55 nations are divided into 4 leagues; Leagues A and B have 12 teams however League C has 14 teams while League D has 16 teams. The division is based on the countries’ rankings. Each of these leagues split up the teams into 4 smaller groups of 3 or 4 nations.

These countries each play 4 to 6 games based on the home- and- away round robin system. Teams get points and the lowest teams from each group in each league are relegated (except for teams in D) and the highest is promoted (except in A).

The best teams from the groups in league A move on to the semi-finals at the end of November and the winners from those games play in the finals, while the losers compete for third place. So as you can see, this is a rather complicated system.

Now on to the why? Why does this exist? It was started because international friendlies are getting boring. Many soccer fans have found the international friendlies to be unamusing because countries don’t seem to take the games too seriously. In an effort to make these matches more exciting, EUFA got rid of the international friendlies and instead created the league of nations to raise the stakes.

In the end, I suppose it does serve its purpose, but simply in a very confusing manner.
