Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921, in Greece and has unfortunately passed away as of April 9, 2021, in the United Kingdom at the age of 99. During his life, Prince Philip had achieved many accomplishments alongside his wife, Elizabeth II, the Queen of England.
In 1939, at the age of 18, Prince Philip left school and joined the navy as a special cadet where he was then awarded the Best Cadet Prize. In 1941, Prince Philip served Great Britain during World War II where he took part in active service on the battleships, HMS Ramillies, HMS Valiant and HMS Wallace. For his active role during the searchlights, he was given a special mention by his Commander in Chief and by the time he was 21, Prince Philip had been promoted to lieutenant. Prince Philip was later present in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered in World War II. Finally, in 1952, he was promoted to Commander but later left the navy during the same year when Queen Elizabeth came into power.
In 1952, Prince Philip began his training on how to pilot an aircraft with the Royal Air Force. He officially received his “helicopter wings” in 1956 and a Private Pilot’s License three years later in 1959. These factors contributed to him being the first member of the Royal Family to arrive and depart from Buckingham Palace Garden in a helicopter. However, after many hours spent in the air, Prince Philip ended his flying career in 1997. Another remarkable “first” initiated by Prince Philip was the “Countryside in 1970” conferences which eventually yielded him as the first president of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1961.
On the 29th of May, 1961, Prince Philip became the first-ever royal family member to be interviewed on television. Prince Philip was interviewed by Richard Dimbleby and they had a discussion about the Commonwealth Technical Training Week. This interview played an important role in the modernization of the Royal Family, giving the public a connection to them that was outside of national announcements. This interview helped pave the way for the documentary The Royal Family (1968) which showed the royals at work and rest. As of April 17, 2021, Prince Philip has been buried at St George’s Chapel in the United Kingdom. The Duke of Edinburgh leaves behind an important legacy, one that will not be forgotten very soon.
