Together As One

November 12th and 13th saw not only the uniting of a Catholic school community, but the nations of the world. This year, CSUNA (Catholic Schools United Nations Assembly) took place at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts. Students from across the YCDSB joined together to model a typical United Nations meeting. This consisted of five different committees: General Assembly (GA), World Health Organization (WHO), Human Rights (HR), Economic and Social (ECOSOC) and Security Council (SC).  Each country, depending on its size, is assigned between 1 and 5 committees.

Julia M. (11), who represented Brazil in HR, describes CSUNA as “an incredible and eye opening experience.” She goes on to say that she “learned and debated about many world issues, such as sweatshops, ISIS, and more. It was overall an amazing opportunity and [she] hopes to do more model UN events that our school is involved in.”

Personally speaking, CSUNA broadened my field of vision from seeing my own world to the whole world. I represented Thailand in GA, and it was an experience I will never forget. As a group of students passionate about initiating positive change, we laughed, joked, and debated over world issues. Forming alliances with people I still talk to was probably what I remember most from my model UN experience. Working with the people I met, as well the approximately 80 other delegates in the General Assembly, felt empowering. Being surrounded by different perspectives, but with a common goal is what, I personally, feel CSUNA is about.

Mardy K. (11), who represented Thailand with me, but in WHO, said, “The most amusing part of CSUNA in my opinion was getting to know the other delegates and forming an alliance. It’s also a really powerful feeling going up to  podium and getting your thoughts out to everyone. Oh and watching the US get censured 6 times in a row.”

CSUNA XX was truly two amazing days to remember. We grew closer as a community and more knowledgeable as global citizens. Horizons were expanded and issues were debated.
