On August 31, 2023, the One Piece live action series made its global premiere on Netflix. The new fantasy adventure series, developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, is a live-action adaptation of the manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda, and has been loved by critics and fans alike. The live-action series had a bigger global opening on Netflix than hit shows Wednesday and Stranger Things season 4. In its first five weeks on the streaming service, One Piece earned 430 million hours and after 10 weeks has more than 475 million hours viewed with 63.6 million viewers, all of which have watched all 8 episodes of the series from top to bottom. Even after 10 weeks on air, One Piece is still on Netflix’s Top 10 list.
The show stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, the enthusiastic prospective pirate who is both cursed and gifted with power to make his body rubber-like after eating a devil fruit and Emily Rudd as Nami, the enigmatic thief who hides her past behind her search for a map to the One Piece. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy in an alternate version of Earth on his journey of becoming the next Pirate King by finding One Piece, a mythical treasure that was left behind by the greatest pirate of all, Gol D. Roger.
Due to its positive acclaim, the show has been renewed for a season 2, likely debuting at the end of 2024 or early 2025. In the meantime, fans can stream season 1 of One Piece on Netflix or watch the anime on any streaming service from Hulu to Crunchyroll.
