While people often praise direct democracy for empowering citizens, it is not a system that can be implemented just anywhere. Direct democracy when applied to the country of Canada paints a more nuanced picture. There are a plethora of flaws in direct democracy and complexities in Canadian society that makes this system less effective.

The Ontario Greenbelt, created in 2005 to prevent further environmental loss, has been the subject of heavy debate. Some argue that the Greenbelt’s two million acres of resources and wildlife must be preserved. However, opening the land for development is a necessary sacrifice that will greatly benefit the people of Ontario.

My name is Eva Guo and I am a grade nine student and one of the editorial reporters. Here’s a bit about myself: I enjoy reading about history, drawing, and playing video games.
