Eyesight

The Blinding, possibly the most devastating event that has happened to Earth. Today is the second anniversary of this mass blinding. Let us recap what has happened these past years. On the first of January, at precisely 8 am, everyone’s eyesight disappeared, leaving the entire world in a state of panic. At first, we experienced many difficulties. Many people died from transportation accidents and a lot of things malfunctioned. But through the perseverance of humanity, we overcame our troubles in just a mere six months and adapted to this sightless world. Now we are thriving more than ever before despite our challenges. That is all for today, BW news signing out.

I turned off my radio. Since the Blinding, life didn’t hit the same. It was the same bleak world over and over again. I had long since memorized the layout of my house and the immediate surroundings, something that I would not have thought possible two years ago. During the first few months, I constantly bumped into things and got injured a lot, though, for some reason, I couldn’t feel any pain. Fortunately, my home was a bungalow, and a small one at that. I couldn’t begin to imagine the nightmare it would be to live in a multiple-story house or on a high floor in an apartment. I got dressed and made myself a coffee. I don’t know where I would be without my trusty coffee, the one thing that kept me going during the crazy months.

“Ahh, that hit the spot.”. I felt around in my refrigerator. There was a single bag of bread in it. Sighing, I headed towards the supermarket. As I stepped outside, I felt the warm sunshine. For some reason, since the beginning of the Blinding, the weather was always sunny and warm. As I rounded the corner, I heard some footsteps.

“Hey John”, I said.

“Hi Mark.”

Most people could distinguish others through their gait, a necessary skill we picked up. As I walked towards the supermarket, I wondered about what caused the Blinding. Some conspiracy theorists thought that this was caused by a virus while others believed that this was the work of aliens. Of course, these were not believable because of obvious reasons but one could not help but have some doubts.

I stepped into the supermarket.

“Welcome”, A friendly voice called out. That was Liam, the cashier who worked there even before the Blinding. I headed towards the frozen section and suddenly, a bright light appeared. I staggered and opened my eyes. To my surprise, colours greeted me instead of the monotonous nothing. I blinked, my sight was finally back! I started to call out to Liam but stopped when some words caught my attention. I read it:

Do not tell them you can see

Confused I looked around. This text was scribbled everywhere. I finished my shopping and went to check my items out. As I walked around a shelf to the counter, something weird happened. At the check-out place was something that resembled a human, but it had reddish-brown skin and was significantly taller than the average person. I stifled a gasp, this was what the “them” referred to. I gulped, praying it didn’t notice the sweat forming on my face. It took my items and started to scan them.

“All done, have a good day!” Liam cheerfully said. Its words did not match its facial expression at all. Horrified I replied with a shaky thank you. I stepped outside. I stopped for a moment, bathing in pure colours. I took a breath, thinking about how much I missed this world. The moment I stepped into my home, I started to cry. I was overwhelmed with the sheer beauty of the world. After around half an hour, I calmed down and gathered my bearings. Acting like I was blind was going to be easy as we lived basically like we had eyesight. The hard part was making sure not to comment on anything I saw. Just then I had a horrifying thought, what if I had turned into the same monster that “Liam” was. I hurried to my mirror, but to my dismay, it was too filthy to reflect anything. I sighed and headed to my bed, too tired from the overload of information to do anything. As I drifted off, a sudden thought ran through my head,

“Am I the only one who can see?”.

Several weeks went by with my newly gained eyesight. Not much changed, however it was always a struggle to keep my secret. There were many times when I had almost told someone about my eyesight but at the last moment I held back. Something strange was happening to the world around me though. The more I used my eyes, the more disoriented I was. Sometimes my vision would flicker and I would experience a swirling in my vision. After I woke up, I would also usually have some memory of a strange voice talking to me during my sleep.

One day, as I got out of bed, I experienced a wave of nausea and passed out. As I came to, I had a sudden vision of someone crying next to me. I shook my head, what a strange thing to imagine. What was odd was that they seemed quite familiar yet I couldn’t place a name or face to them. I went to the washroom and splashed some water on my face to wake me up. These things happening to me must be because of my newly gained vision. I just hoped that they would go away eventually.
